Yippee! It’s Wednesday, which means that Shannon at Rocks In My Dryer is hosting another Works-For-Me Wednesday! Check out her site and post your own brilliant advice about something that works for you.
I do two things regularly to keep the odor at bay in the kitchen sink/disposal:
1) I don’t know about you, but sponges at my house get stinky quickly. So, I’ve come up with a system that works for me… I typically do one load of dishes in the dishwasher per day. To keep the sponge smelling nice and clean I make sure it is run through the dishwasher. I cycle two sponges, so every other day one of them gets run through the dishwasher – and that keeps seems to keep them from getting stinky.
2) Another place that seems to get stinky in the kitchen is the disposal. So my solution, actually I learned it from Hubby, so I guess it’s his solution ~ is to put ice down the disposal. Almost every night, I put a handfull or two of ice cubes down the disposal under warm water. The ice knocks any remaining food particles off the blades, and the water washes all of the grunginess away. For a “deep cleaning” about once a month, I fill the entire disposal with ice, then turn it on. The ice quickly turns a yucky color, so I know it’s scrubbing the inside of the disposal container clean. After the ice spins around for a minute or so I run hot water down the sink and it washes all of the yucky-ness away.
No more stinky sinks ~ works for me!

Great tips! Just had the plumber out to fix my backed up sink–great timing! Now I can keep the disposal clear and fresh!
We don’t have a disposal in our current house.
But when we had one, I’d run orange peels in it whenever we had oranges. The texture helps clean out the gunkiness, and the smell is fantastic.
My husband always asks if I am putting furniture down the garbage disposal when I do the “full of ice” trick. Every so often I also pour baking soda in the sink and then after a few hours (so I usually do this over night) I pour vinegar down the drain to have it bubble up and wash it away.
Great Tips!!
