A couple of weeks ago at our small group meeting, the conversation somehow got on the topic of “Odd Food Combinations.” I volunteered an old family favorite – biscuits with chocolate syrup.
When I was a kid, I lived for the weekends that Dad made this for breakfast. It was my all time favorite – bar none. Dad and I happily gobbled up biscuits laden with warm chocolate syrup, while Mom tried her best not to gag while watching us. I think she puttered around in the back of the house so she wouldn’t have to be in the same room as us while we were eating this weird combination.
Some where in time though, things changed. I don’t know when it happened but, I somehow turned into my mother. Now the mere thought of chocolate covered biscuits makes me want to hurl. But, at least I have fond memories of breakfast with Dad.
One of the women in the group offered one of her grandparent’s favorite food combination – scrambled eggs with canned tuna. Ble-ch! She said they ate it because it was cheap. Eggs from the chickens they raised, and throw in an inexpensive can of tuna from the market – and voila! The food of champions, well champions from Oklahoma, were born.
This conversation got me thinking, I’m sure there are all sorts of strange food combinations that people love. Like I add a tablespoon or so of peanut butter to my chili whenever I make it, my best friend from high school loves ketchup on her scrambled eggs, my grandfather likes to add picante sauce to his bowl of chicken and dumplings. Some food combinations sound like they might be sorta tasty, while others make me want to run for the bathroom. So, I have to ask you – what strange food combinations do you like? Or if you’re not willing to claim it as yours, what strange food combinations have you heard of?

Big Daddy likes ketchup on his mac and cheese, and he dips his grilled cheese sandwiches in ketchup, too. He also likes Heinz 57 or Ketchup on top of the cream gravy that’s on top of his chicken fried steak. UCK.
But the weirdest? When I was a kid, we were friends with a family who ate bologna and mustard sandwiches – with crunchy peanut butter on ‘em. I tasted it and it was strangely okay – but I’ve never had the craving for one.
I’m with you…some of these things make me want to hurl!
My dad eats ketchup on his ChefBoyardee Ravioli.
My husband thinks it’s strange enough that I used to eat my pb&j mixed together and THEN on bread. But I think he’s gross for dipping Nacho Doritos in French Onion dip!!
I’d say the most weird thing I like to have now is a french fry dipped in my Wendy’s frosty.
