I don’t think it’s any secret that I loathe doing laundry. I am not motivated to wash, dry, fold, and hang anything. Especially when the pile magically reappears days later. So occasionally (like this week) I forget a load in the washing machine and it becomes stinky with a yucky mildew odor that permeates the laundry room. When I was in the midst of complaining to myself, I remembered a tip I heard a while back, and in walks my new best friend…
You probably know her. I’ve used her to clean my hot water pot, to make a salad dressing, to make an interesting science experiment, to add to boiling eggs, etc., etc., etc… Her name is Vinegar. I rewashed the stinky load with a cup or two of Vinegar added to the wash and, voila! I had fresh smelling laundry. And, there was a bonus! In addition to smelling great, it was also much softer and felt more snugly. It worked great at removing the mineral deposits that are in our hard water here in DFW.
So, when I did another seven loads of laundry yesterday, I added vinegar to all of them. Now all the clothes and towels are soft and comfy.
Guess I’ll be adding a gallon of vinegar to my weekly shopping list.

Hey, I have issues with the laundry, too! It is just the most mind-numbing chore. So gald to hear I’m not the only one who leaves their clothes in the machine!
Unfortunately for me, vinegar and I are not-quite-mortal enemies. Just the smell of vinegar is enough to give me a serious headache. Of course, that partly has something to do with an incident at work involving a major spill of concentrated acetic acid.
I wonder if there’s anything out there that is just as good!
I’ve been meaning to give that a try. Sounds like I need to add vinegar to my shopping list, too.
You know, Pioneer Woman says it’s working great in her hair! I’m going to try both! I hate smelly laundry, and there are older washcloths that when you rewet them they have a faint mildewy smell, maybe this would help!
thanks!
Kris, I saw her post on using vinegar as a rinse. I started to think it would work wonders on my hair. Then I remembered that my hair is usually limp and has no body to it, and I started thinking that the minerals might be the only thing giving it the little bit of body it has now… Oh, well. Let me know how it works if you try it!
I’m about to add some to a load of towels right now! THanks for the tip! Haven’t tried it on my hair yet!
