I don't have an 8 year old boy, but these are my guesses of what might be good (and hopefully at the library!). The Great Brain series by John Fitzgerald. Not the whole Little House on the Prairie series, but the Farmer Boy book might be good. The Magic Treehouse books by Mary Pope Osborne. The Borrowers series by Mary Norton. A good story based Bible, but geared towards older kids - I'm sorry I don't have a recommendation. I just got The Adventure Bible for my nephew who is 8, but it's a regular Bible with "cool" extra stuff so it might take more guidance. Maybe the Paddington Bear series or the Boxcar Children. And you might also look for some kids magazines like Ranger Rick, National Geographic for kids, etc. for a change too. The Cam Jansen books might be enjoyable too. And ask the children's librarian. He or She should have some good ideas of things they have. Some of those How Stuff Works books might get him thinking too. Hope that helps. I'm a book lover from way back!

Thanks, Rachel! I'll look for Jake Drake. I've seen A to Z - I'll have to see if I can find them at the library. :)

I appreciate your warning of the Wimpy Kid books. All of the reasons you mentioned are reasons I don't let them watch certain television shows - so I will definitely avoid them.

Thanks again!

The Jake Drake series is a good one. There are only a few books in the series, but they all have good lessons about being a good friend, honesty, doing well in school, etc.

For a little easier read, try A to Z Mysteries.

I don't know what else to recommend. My oldest (9 years) doesn't like fiction very much, so the above is about all he's read.

I do NOT recommend the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. It's for a little older (8-10 years), but the characters are all selfish, rude, lying, cheating -- not good role models at all. I would stay away from those!
