I wanted to share some information that Hubby learned after the Smoke Detector Incident in January.

We’ve all heard how we should change the batteries in our smoke detectors twice a year, every time we Spring forward or Fall back.   Well, it turns out that you should do more than just replace the batteries.   According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) we should also replace our smoke detectors every 10 years.   Apparently the ion detector in them can go out and make the unit ineffective rendering your smoke detector useless.

To see the video Hubby and the boys made about how to check the date of your smoke detector, click here.

It would seem that many home owners in our area have had an experience similar to mine.   (All of their smoke alarms going off with no smoke or fire.)   I guess that is not too surprising, considering many of our homes were built at the same time.   After responding to several incidents, our local Fire Marshal published a flyer about replacing your smoke detectors every 10 years.   To see it, click here.

So, while it’s not a very fun gift, maybe we should all ask for new smoke detectors for Mother’s Day this year. :)
