We went on a really cool field trip today!  A friend in the local homeschool group coordinated a trip to the Star-Telegram Printing Facility.  I wanted to make sure the boys could see how newspapers are printed.  In this day of internet/immediate news, I’m not sure how much longer we’ll see printed newspapers.

We saw the Star-Telegram museum, huge vats of ink, immense rolls of paper (that weigh as much as a VW bug, and hold over 9 miles of paper), robots that fetch said rolls of paper, the aluminum printing plates being made, the printing press, and an amazing conveyor belt that wound through out the enormous assembly room.  It was truly a sight to behold. I’m so glad we were able to do this field trip.

Near the end of the trip, the tour guide asked if any of the children had questions.  I silently cringed when Tigger raised his hand, because he has a tendency to ask completely-off-the-wall, random questions just so he can feel like he is participating.  Historically, we’d hear something along the lines of “Do you like strawberries?”  But today, he asked a relevant question!  He asked how many newspapers were printed in a day.  :) In case you want to know the answer, the tour guide said they print 220,000 Monday – Saturday papers and 400,000 Sunday papers.
